Probably the most comprehensive
evaluation of the environmental impact of motorbikes in the world. Motorrad und
Umwelt was published in 1998 by the German
Ministry of the Environment. It cuts through all the crap from the
motorcycle industry and lobbyists, pointing at the very real
environmental threat from the rising numbers of motorbikes on our
roads. Far from being environmentally benign, motorbikes produce more
air pollution, noise and road danger than the average car. The
report recommends a ban on motorcycle parking and cobbled roads to
deter motorcycles, along with rev and power limits.
Unfortunately we have
not yet been able to find an English translation of the document,

Download the
document in .pdf format, ~600kb.
- There is further good material
(this time in English) on the excessive levels of motorcycle pollution
from The
California Air Resources Board detailing how motorcycles produce
up to 15
times the emissions per mile as the average new car or light-duty
truck.
